Standing with Lewis Moody: A Community United in Support

Rugby has always been about courage, commitment, and looking after your teammates. Today, that spirit extends far beyond the pitch.

Why This Appeal Matters

Our great friend Lewis Moody has announced that he is living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). With no cure currently available, this is incredibly difficult news for Lewis, his wife Annie, and their two sons.

Lewis is known around the world for everything he achieved on the rugby field with Leicester, Bath, England and the British & Irish Lions. A former England captain and 2003 Rugby World Cup winner, he has also spent the last 12 years as a passionate charitable campaigner, raising more than £2 million through The Lewis Moody Foundation to support those affected by brain tumours.

True to character, Lewis is focusing on staying positive, living life fully and facing each new challenge as it comes. Now, it’s our turn to support him.

About the Lewis Moody Fundraising Appeal

In response to Lewis’s diagnosis, friends and former teammates have created the Lewis Moody Fundraising appeal on GoFundMe.
Organised by Geordan Murphy, the campaign provides a way for the rugby family – and anyone inspired by Lewis’s story – to show their love and support.

The fundraiser is helping to:

  • Support the immediate and future needs of Lewis, Annie and their children.
  • Contribute towards any medical, practical and accessibility requirements that may arise.
  • Enable Lewis and his family to continue backing causes close to their hearts,
once they have been able to decide where best to focus their efforts.

As of today, the appeal has raised over £253,000 of a £280,000 goal from thousands of generous donors – a powerful reflection of how many lives Lewis has touched.

Lewis Moody: More Than a Rugby Legend

Lewis’s reputation as a player is unquestioned: fearless, relentless, and always putting his body on the line for his team. But it is the man off the field that so many people speak about with equal admiration.

Through The Lewis Moody Foundation, he has campaigned tirelessly for those affected by brain tumours – families who often face uncertainty, fear and immense practical challenges.
He has used his profile to raise awareness, drive fundraising and bring hope to others when they need it most.

Now, facing his own life-changing diagnosis, that same community has the opportunity to rally around him.

Learn More About Motor Neurone Disease

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive, life-shortening condition that affects the nerves (motor neurones) in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, it leads to increasing muscle weakness and loss of mobility, speech and, eventually, breathing.

Rugby has always celebrated courage and togetherness. Lewis embodied those values every time he pulled on a shirt. Now, as he faces the reality of living with MND, we have the chance to reflect that same courage and togetherness back to him.
